Legal Secretary/Paralegal
Houston

The ideal candidate for the position will have experience working with California and Texas courts, have knowledge of document review platforms such as Relativity, and have the skills and knowledge to work as a Legal Secretary and Paralegal on California and Texas cases.  Must have the ability to manage a large caseload.  The candidate must have excellent time management, writing, communication and organization skills and have the ability to work overtime when needed.  Candidate must maintain a professional attitude and manner. 

The Legal Secretary\Paralegal will report to the Partners and\or Office Manager on the following job functions:

  • Coordinate attorney and client meetings
  • Calendar management
  • Interface with staff at all levels
  • Strong telephone skills, takes detailed messages
  • Transcription, formatting and editing documents; prepare documentation for court filings
  • Triage all incoming queries and issues
  • Arrange travel (ground and air)
  • Maintain client and personal files (paper and electronic)
  • Draft general correspondence
  • Expense reimbursement
  • Retention/Retainer letters
  • Billing (pre-bills)
  • EDiscovery
  • Research existing technologies
  • Research legal procedures
  • Draft correspondence
  • Identify, gather, analyze and organize relevant documents for cases
  • Manage case dockets, and interact with clients
  • Coordinate and manage document reviews and Productions
  • Prepare case summaries and chronologies
  • Assist with investigations, depositions, mediation and arbitration/trial preparation

Skills and Requirements:

  • Legal Secretary: Minimum of 5-7 years of legal secretarial experience in a law firm
  • Paralegal: Bachelor's degree, Associate's degree, or paralegal certificate or 10 years of comparable work experience is preferred 
  • Must be familiar and experience with California and Texas courts
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Outlook, Excel and Power Point
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Proficient in e-Filing
  • Excellent grammar in oral and written form
  • Excellent judgment
  • Resourceful and great problem-solving skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong follow up and follow through on all matters
  • Must be able to multi-task and quickly switch gears when necessary and maintain efficiency
  • Must be able to work independently and anticipate needs/be proactive
  • Maintains a professional appearance in person and on the telephone
  • Must be able to manage and prioritize competing assignments and meet deadlines
  • Must be flexible and able to work beyond regular work schedule on short notice
  • Trial experience a plus
  • Knowledge of litigation terms and procedures
  • Strong organizational skills, including an ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, be accountable and work well under pressure
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills
  • Strong editing and proofreading skills
  • Strong work ethic, positive, solution-oriented attitude
