Kasowitz Attorneys Coach John Dewey High School Mock Trial Team

For the ninth straight year, Kasowitz attorneys have coached a team of students from the Law Institute at John Dewey High School in the New York City Mock Trial Tournament, as part of the New York State Mock Trial Competition.  The team advanced to the fourth round of the tournament, placing it among the top 32 participating high schools in New York City.  The defendant in the mock criminal case was accused of stealing used cooking oil from a restaurant and resisting arrest.  Kasowitz attorneys worked with the students to prepare both the prosecution and defense sides of the case, including opening statements, direct and cross examinations, and closing arguments.

“We are extremely proud of how well the team performed this year, and were impressed by their dedication and commitment,” said Kasowitz partner Sarah G. Leivick.

Kasowitz is the mentor law firm for John Dewey High School in Brooklyn, through a program run by the Justice Resource Center, which pairs law firms with New York City public high schools.  In addition to coaching the mock trial team, Kasowitz attorneys have coached students in the MENTOR Moot Court Competition, made presentations to John Dewey classes, hosted students at the firm to discuss career opportunities in the legal field, and accompanied students on court visits.

The Kasowitz attorneys that coached the mock trial team includes partners Sarah G. Leivick and Sondra D. Grigsby, counsel Julie R. Fischer, and associates Brittany F. Alzfan and John P. Planamento.
