Michael Bowe Speaks with Fox News about Marine Corps Discharge of Soldier Who Warned of Dangers that Led to Murders at American Military Base
Kasowitz Partner Michael Bowe was interviewed on Fox News regarding the United States Marine Corps’ (“USMC”) recent decision to honorably discharge Marine Reserves Major Jason Brezler for communicating with the USMC and a United States Congressman about conditions threatening the safety of soldiers stationed at an American military base in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province. The first communication, an email sent to the USMC containing classified reports, warned of the potentially hostile situation threatening the safety of Marines stationed at the base. Two weeks after Major Brezler sent that "red flag" email, Gregory Buckley Jr. and two other Marines were murdered while exercising in the gym at the base. The second communication, an exchange with Congressman Peter King, was sent in response to inquiries which the Congressman made on behalf of Gregory Buckley Jr.’s family when they sought his support after the USMC failed to respond to their inquiries about the murders. That exchange, which Michael Bowe describes as “statutorily protected speech,” immediately preceded the USMC’s decision to honorably discharge Major Brezler.
