Kasowitz's negotiation of a settlement between cigarette manufacturer Liggett Group Inc. and five states and a nationwide class of smokers is featured in the March 13, 1996 issue of The Wall Street Journal, in a front-page article entitled "Liggett Group Offers First-Ever Settlement of Cigarette Lawsuits." The settlement was hailed by the President, other leading government officials and public health authorities as a "historic watershed" in the country's efforts to address smoking and health issues. Marc Kasowitz and Daniel Benson are credited with having conceived of the settlements.
