On October 29, 2013, Kasowitz attorneys and the firm were honored by The Legal Aid Society as recipients of its 2013 Pro Bono Publico Award for outstanding service, dedication and commitment to The Legal Aid Society and its clients.
The firm was recognized for its assistance in the Society’s Hurricane Sandy relief efforts, including staffing a Disaster Relief Helpline and assisting victims in connection with denied flood and homeowners insurance claims.
Partner David Abrams received the Public Interest Law Leadership Award for his role in establishing the firm’s growing pro bono partnership with the Society. Abrams was also recognized for establishing the firm’s unemployment insurance program and for his ongoing support to the Society and its clients.
The Society honored partner Joseph Gershman and associates Eric Askanase, Rebecca Hagenson, Jennifer McDougall, Marissa Teicher, and Michael Wilson for assisting the Queens Foreclosure Prevention Unit in several complex multi-party cases involving real estate and lending fraud. Associates Teresa Matushaj, Cara Ciuffani, Evan Fensterstock and Benjamin Kopelman were recognized for assisting clients through the Society’s Access to Benefits Helpline and the firm’s unemployment insurance program.
