Biography:
Donald Putterman concentrates his practice on complex, high profile civil litigation requiring discovery, analysis, and presentation of complicated factual and legal issues. His cases typically are in the areas of business torts, fraud and breach of fiduciary duty, partnership and corporate governance, unfair competition, trade secrets, breach of contract, real estate, attorney and accounting malpractice, and defamation. Mr. Putterman is an experienced trial, arbitration and appellate advocate, appearing on behalf of both plaintiffs and defendants in all California state and federal courts.
Mr. Putterman is well known as a trade secret litigator in the Electronic Design Automation industry. He has conducted fiduciary investigations and served as special counsel to the board of directors of a substantial technology company, advising on a broad range of sensitive litigation-related and corporate governance topics. Mr. Putterman also has litigated many real property- related disputes involving such topics as land purchase and sale contracts, limited partnership and LLC governance, buy-outs and dissolution, professional malpractice, fraud and breach of fiduciary duty, promissory notes and secured transaction, and leases.
Between 1979 and 1988, Mr. Putterman was associated with Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro. From 1988 until 1995, Mr. Putterman was with San Francisco's Farella, Braun & Martel, first as special counsel and later as a litigation partner. In 1995, Mr. Putterman founded the civil litigation department, and was Managing Partner, at Sideman & Bancroft LLP until he joined Kasowitz, Benson, Torres & Friedman in 2008.
Mr. Putterman is listed in The Best Lawyers in America: 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and also is listed in Northern California Super Lawyers: 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. Mr. Putterman is also named amongst the “San Francisco Business Times 2009 Best Lawyers in the Bay Area,” and has been recognized in Best Lawyers 2009, 2010 and 2011.
Associations/Affiliations Mr. Putterman taught a moot court section at the University of California, Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law for five years, and was a faculty member at the College of Civil Advocacy sponsored annually by the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. He has lectured on trial preparation and tactics and was the 1999-2000 President of the Lawyers' Club of San Francisco.
